Ekaterina

A big defeat for world number one Iga Swiatek as top-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova won with a record of 6-4, 6-2 in their fourth-round encounter at the Miami Open. With Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff out of the tournament, Alexandrova exhibited powerful displays of her skills from the beginning of the competition and eliminated all three top contenders.

After Alexandrova took control over Swiatek in the first game, the top-notch player never seemed at ease again. Alexandrova continued to dominate the match with some brilliant, aggressive tennis. Initially, Swiatek had some hope of winning the match after winning against  Linda Noskova in the previous round, but her Russian opponent was not going to let mistakes get in the way of her journey to victory.

Swiatek admitted: “I just feel disappointed, for sure because I thought I was going to play better here in Miami. But she played an amazing match and for sure was the better play out there today.” She also declared that she had a hard time reading Alexandrova’s serves and that things did not go as well as planned in the game.

Though Alexandrova was not going to minimize her performance, she did laugh off the idea that she had played a flawless match.

“It was such a great game for me in consistency, the serve, the returns, the playing from the baseline, I think it was pretty good and I hope I can keep it for the next match,” she stated.

She was a quarterfinalist in the Miami Open last year as well. She is now preparing to compete with  Jessica Pegula, the fifth seed.
