Daniil Medvedev, Russia

At the recent Monte-Carlo Masters match, Daniil Medvedev lost to his countryman Karen Khachanov in the third round and questioned the referees for two consecutive days for what he saw as an incorrect and game-changing call.

Officials ruled that Khachanov’s inaccurate shot was in play after Medvedev lost the opening set 6-3 and the second set at 5-5. However, subsequent replays revealed that the ball had missed the court’s white lines. As a result of a double fault by Medvedev, Khachanov was awarded two break points and would eventually take advantage.

Immediately following the ruling, Medvedev threw his racket against the court’s wall in an apparent attempt to express his dissatisfaction.

Medvedev’s rants

The 28-year-old was eager to vent his frustration with what he perceived to be a missed call from the authorities. He referee Cedric Mourier and chair umpire Carlos Bernardes to voice out his frustrations.

“You go look at the mark, the mark is fricking out. They don’t know how to referee anymore; the mark is out. Who will take action? Who will take action?… Yesterday, the ball was out, it was called in. Who will take action? This ball is out there. Who will take responsibility?”

“It’s not my responsibility to referee the matches. It’s this guy in the glasses. He doesn’t need glasses because he doesn’t see anything, he should not be a referee. It’s in front of him … He’s a bad referee, he should be out of the referee circle. It’s clay, it’s not hard court, it’s out.”

“It’s the second day in a row, guys. Open your freaking eyes! Open your eyes! Sit there and do something,” he concluded.
