World Cup

As the battle continues between the respective groups, there are interesting facts about all the previous World Cups. One of them is knowing about which countries has won the World Cup the most number of times. 

It is a hard cup to win as, firstly, it happens only between a period of every four years, and with it comes the controversies. Case in point, this year’s world cup with the whole human rights and beer drama that the Qatar 2022 World Cup is dealing with. 

Previously on Sportsry, we discussed the players who have scored the most for the World Cup, and also prominent Premier Leagues players that did not make the cut for it. This cup is meant for people to not just look forward to tomorrow, but also reminisce on the past as it has been around since the 1930s. 

According to NBC New York, there are 32 teams all over the world that are competing in this World Cup. Furthermore, they have also stated which countries have won the most number of times in FIFA’s history. 

Number five, France

France is not commonly known for their football skills, but they in fact did win the 2018 and the 1998 World Cups. They played against Brazil in the final match on their home soil and scored 3-0 against the Latin American country. 

Prior to France hosting the cup in 1998, the last they hosted was in 1938. That is a whole 60-year gap that they had between hosting the FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, they have finished in the third place in 1958, 1982 and 1986.

Number four, Argentina

Similar to France, they have won the World Cup twice, however, they won them earlier than France. Like way earlier. In 1978 and 1986 to be precise. Argentina has been the runner up for the cup for three times. Namely in 1930, 1990 and 2014. 

They have an impressive record by having 47 victories within 82 matches. A number that many countries are unable to beat. They have been present for all but four of the World Cups, which shows their determination with football. 

Number three, Italy

Italy has won more cups than Argentina and France, four cups to be precise. They have won the cup in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. They were present in 18 out of 22 of the tournaments and reached six finals during their time playing for the cup. 

They have beaten France in the 2006 tournament, which was regarded to be one of the most watched sporting events ever at 700 million views at the time. In 1938, they beat Hungary in a 4-2 match. 

Number two, Germany

Germany is slightly more complicated as East Germany, which was another Germany that was frequently disqualified, the cumulative win is only calculated for the West side. They have won the same number as Italy did, which was four times. 

Quite an impressive feat as their country was split into two throughout most of the World Cups. Germany’s history is split into three segments which are the Nazi Germany era, West Germany era and the current reunified Germany era.

They have won the tournament in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. Throughout FIFA’s history, Germany has always placed third or higher and this was from the 1930s up till today. 

Number one, Brazil

Brazil is considered the best cream of the crop as they have won five World Cups throughout history. They have won the cup more times than France and Argentina combined. Brazil has won the tournament in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. 

They have a record of winning 73 times within 109 games. It is an impressive record compared to the other countries competing in the tournament. Decades ago, their biggest rivals were Argentina as they are from the same region. 

2022 World Cup 

It is unsure who will win this year’s tournament, furthermore with Qatar having a number of controversies under its belt. However, will either five of these countries win the cup, or will a new country take home the trophy this year? We will have to wait and find out.
