With an incredible win in the Women’s Scratch Race in Denmark, Lorena Wiebes made her debut at the UCI Track World Championships wearing a gold medal around her neck.
At the beginning of the last lap of the race, the 25-year-old athlete was dedicated to giving it her all and pushed herself to be at the front. She did not back down and it led her to a decisive win. This was an incredible victory for the Dutch cyclist who had recently competed in the Simac Ladies Tour three days prior.
Wiebes’ track athletic journey
The young athlete has undoubtedly a lot more experience with outdoor courses. Currently, she has two Road Race victories at the European Championships.
However, she managed to tackle the velodrome with so much ease, and she won and beat the field. She defeated Jennifer Valenta of the United States, who finished second, and Ally Wollaston of New Zealand, who finished third.
Unfortunately, there is a downside for her win as she was introduced as an American, not Dutch, during the medal ceremony.
