The NBA draft is quickly approaching while the Milwaukee Bucks are still in the early stages of their head coaching search and must make two important personnel decisions with unrestricted free agents Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton, who has a player option to choose from.
Although the Bucks don’t have a first-round pick, general manager Jon Horst said his staff has continued to gather data on this year’s eligible prospects under the direction of vice president of global scouting Ryan Hoover. The NBA combine gets underway this week in Chicago, with 78 draft-eligible players expected to attend and work out for NBA teams.
The team’s youngest member, Marjon Beauchamp, is 22 years old.
Horst responded that it was still too early in the self-evaluation process to declare seeking to add more youngsters to the roster for next season as a goal. This response came in response to a question at the beginning of May, an article on Yahoo Sports reported.
“Probably the next time we talk around the draft or whatever, it will be clearer what path we think we need to be on,” He continued “I’ll say it’s clearly something to think about. Even now, when I consider it, I don’t consider it to be the center of our group. Our team’s core consists of players who were extremely influential, highly effective and had outstanding seasons. I don’t think that group is affected by age and athletic ability alone.
“On our team as a whole, you talk about getting through the course of a regular season, you talk about kind of wild cards and playoff series and things like that, it’s absolutely one of the characteristics, or I guess you named two, that is up for debate and consideration in ways to try to improve the roster. There’s no doubt. To call it a priority yet, I wouldn’t do that. We’re not deep enough in our analysis to do that yet.”
