Dilip Tirkey

The legendary defender Dilip Tirkey thinks the current Indian hockey team has players of caliber who can win the world championship again after a 47-year absence. In 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, India claimed their lone World Cup victory.

India has a tremendous chance to place third because they are the hosts of the upcoming competition in January 2019. Between January 13 and January 29, Bhubaneswar and Rourkela will host the World Cup.

The current Indian men’s team is a very assured group, and the performances they have provided over the past few years have delighted the fans. Tirkey, who is also the president of Hockey India, expressed his confidence that they would perform well in the World Cup.

Tirkey’s remarks

“I want them to play confidently and put their best foot forward. There are good players on the team. Tirkey, a former captain of India who played on the team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games in 1998, has represented his country in three World Cups and as many Olympics,” stated Tirkey

The 45-year-old stated that his greatest desire was to represent his country at the World Cup and the Olympics.

In 1998, I participated in my first World Cup. I was quite proud to be a member of the World Cup team, said Tirkey, who won the Padma Shri Award in 2004.

Without a sure, leading the Indian squad was a positive experience, and our hockey was excellent as well. It was undoubtedly a very proud experience for me to serve as captain during the Olympics, World Cup, and even the Asian Games.
